Thousands of Londoners took part in Car Free Day celebrations on 22nd September 2001. Tower Bridge closed to cars all day, with a giant papier-mache cyclist, bands and dance groups performing in the afternoon.
London Cycling Campaign groups arranged eight rides Linking local CFD events, which were being coordinated by 15 boroughs across the capital, 11 involving road closures. For those not cycling, London Buses provided 10,000 free bus tickets. Mayor Ken Livingstone joined the Tower Bridge event.
